Centretown is re-Designated Baby Friendly!

Centretown Community Health Centre is pleased to announce their re-designation as a baby friendly health facility. The Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) is a WHO/UNICEF strategy to implement practices to promote, protect and support breastfeeding.

Maintaining BFI designation demonstrates Centretown CHC’s recognition of the health benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and baby, and efforts to protect, promote and support breastfeeding and always respect the decision of each mother. Clinical practice complies with the WHO international Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes and its subsequent resolutions.

Ever wonder about what rights you have as a breastfeeding mother?

You have rights as a breastfeeding mother, including the right to breastfeed a child in a public area and to receive services free of discrimination. Examples of public areas include: restaurants and cafés, stores and malls, schools, parks and public transit. No one should prevent you from breastfeeding your child simply because you are in a public area. They should not ask you to “cover up,” disturb you, or ask you to move to another area that is more “discreet.” Pregnant or breastfeeding mothers cannot be discriminated against at work and or by their union, if they have one. To learn more, visit the Ontario Human Rights Commission webpage.
